Modification of epidermal cells

Epidermal cells are modified to form various structures such as root hair, epidermal appendages, trichomes.

Root hair

Unicellular hairs are the extensions of the epidermal cell of roots. It increases the surface area for absorption of water and minerals.

Epidermal appendages

Trichomes are epidermal hair found in the exposed part of the plant stem. It protects the plants from high temperatures, insect pests etc.
