Epidermis plays an important role in the survival of a plant. Explain.

Solution

The epidermis is the single layer of cells which is present on the outer surface of the plant tissues. The cells of the epidermis are coated with the layer of cuticle. This layer provides protection to the inner cells or the plant tissues. The cuticle is a waxy layer which is waterproof. This prevents the loss of water from the plant tissues. There are stomata which are minute pores present in the layer of the epidermis. The guard cells of the stomata are responsible for the exchange of gases required for respiration and photosynthesis. The root hair which are the modified cells of the epidermis help in absorption of water and salts.
