Equal volumes of ethene and hydrogen at same temperature and pressure are passed through catalyst maintained at 300⁰C, an addition reaction takes place. The catalyst used is:
Nickel
Ethene reacts with hydrogen in the presence of a finely divided nickel catalyst at a temperature of about 300∘C to give ethane.
The hydrogenation or addition reaction holds true for any alkene in the presence of nickel catalyst. However, the hydrogenation reaction can also be carried out by using platinum or palladium as a catalyst.
