The asexual phase (schizogony) in Plasmodium takes place in the RBCs of the infected host. In erythrocytic schizogony, the merozoites invade the RBCs and form a young trophozoite which grows in size and forms the signet ring trophozoite. It forms a food vacuole containing enzymes and many pinocytotic vesicles in which digestion take place. Hemoglobin is enzymatically broken into its protein component and hematin. It then develops into amoeboid trophozoite which gives rise to schizont which undergoes multiple nuclear divisions to form 12-24 nuclei surrounded by cytoplasmic masses. Each cytoplasmic mass with one nucleus forms a merozoite which gets liberated into blood plasma after rupturing RBC. One complete erythrocytic cycle takes 48 hours in P. vivax, P. ovale and P. falciparum. It takes 72 hours in P. malariae.
