Escherichia coli, the most studied microorganism, has been found to possess a variety of plasmid types including those associated with the production of human insulin.
It is cultured in a medium containing lactose. If the lactose is absent then the repressor will not bind the operator allowing transcription of the lac operon genes. The repressor will bind the operator allowing transcription of the lac operon genes.
