Solution

Population explosion basically refers to the sudden and high increase in the growth of human population. The basic reason behind this explosion is the increase in the survival rate. With slowly falling birth rate and a highly declining death rate, the survival rate increases rapidly which in turn results in an increase in the total population of a country.
The following is a detailed explanation of the two major causes of population explosion in India.

a. Slow rate of fall or an increase in the birth rate
Birth rate refers to the ratio of total live births to total population and is generally expressed as the number of live births per 1,000 of the population per year. The following are some causes of high birth rate.
i. Universal and early marriage- Marriage is considered to be a universal necessity in India due to the social and religious beliefs. Also, due to the low average age of marriage, the child bearing period is more. Thus, all these factors result in a high birth rate.
ii. Poverty- The poor people are generally illiterate and consider children as an additional helping hand. This is a major cause of their large family size.
iii. Tropical Climate- The tropical climate of India causes children to attain puberty at an early age. This in turn results in a high birth rate in India.

b. Declining death rate
Death rate is the ratio of total deaths to total population and is generally expressed as the number of deaths per 1,000 of the population per year. The following are some causes of declining death rate in India.
i. Control on natural calamities- With rapid improvement in the transportation facilities, communication, water supply etc, there has been a check on the natural calamities and their disastrous effects such as famine and floods.
ii. Improvement in medical facilities- There has been a rise in the medical and health facilities in India. As a result of which many diseases like T.B, cholera, malaria are next to eradication.
iii. Better education facilities- With high education and literacy, people tend to be more aware about their health thereby, resulting in a decrease in the death rate.

Thus, we see that a slow rate of fall or an increase in the birth rate and rapidly declining death rate are the major causes that lead to population explosion.
