Question

Estimate how large can be the aperture opening to work with laws of ray optics using a monochromatic light of wavelength 450 nm to a distance of around 20 m.

Open in App
Solution

The distance at which this width equals the size of the aperture is called the Fresnel distance (in Fresnel diffraction method) which is given by

zF=a2λ where a is the aperture zF is the distance acquired.

λ=450×109m

zF=20m

a2=zF×λ

=20×450×109

=9×106m

=3×103m

=0.003m
