Solution

The correct option is C

the flame extinguishes and the gas does not burn

A functional group is defined as a group of atoms that exist in a molecule and describes the characteristics reactions of organic compounds is called a functional group.

The functional group present in carboxylic acid is COOH.

The ethanoic acid (CH3COOH) is reacted with Sodium bicarbonate carbonate (Na2CO3) to form Carbon dioxide (CO2), Sodium acetate (CH3COONa), and water (H2O) as the final product.

The reaction that happens is written as follows:

CH3COOH(l)+Na2CO3(s)CH3COONa+CO2(g)+H2O(l)(Ethanoic(sodiumhydrogen(sodium(carbon+(water)acid)carbonate)acetate)dioxide)

Observations:

Carbon dioxide CO2 gas is evolved immediately with brisk effervescence no pop sound is produced.

Carbon dioxide is a non-supporter of ignition it does not burn, So the carbon dioxide gas extinguishes the burning splinter that is brought near it.

Hence, option (C) is the correct option.
