We can write $(98)^{2} = (100 - 2)^{2}$
Using the identity, $(a - b)^{2} = a^{2} + b^{2} - 2 a b$

$= (100 - 2)^{2}$
$= (100)^{2} + (2)^{2} - 2 (100) (2)$
$= 10000 + 4 - 400$
$= 10004 - 400$
$= 9604$
Therefore, $98^{2} = 9604$
