The main persons responsible for the unificiation of Italy was Count Cavour, Giuseppe Mazzini and Giuseppe Garibaldi. The idea behind Italian unification originated with Mazzini in the 1830s. Garibaldi's role was to launch a military struggle and handing over the southern Italian kingdoms like Sicily and handing them over to the kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia. Cavour was the Prime Minister of Piedmont-Sardinia. Through a series of wars, he enlarged the territory under the control of Piedmont. He was, therefore, able to declare a unified Italy under the leadership of King Victor Emmanuel II of Piedmont once Garibaldi had handed over the southern Italian kingdoms to Piedmont.
