Evaluation of seed cultivars is done by
Newly developed cultivars that have gone through the various steps of plant breeding are tested in the fields for at least three growing seasons. The testing is done at several locations in the country, representing all the agro-climatic zones where the crop is usually grown. Evaluation of the cultivars is then done by comparing it with the best available local crop cultivars in the farms. A new cultivar that is superior to all the existing cultivars is thus selected and it undergoes a process called as seed multiplication where the cultivars are grown under suitable conditions and a large quantity of seeds, essential for its commercial spread is produced. It is then checked for quality and certified by an authority and released into the market for agricultural purposes.
