Question

Evaporation is the change of liquid to the vapor state at any temperature below the boiling point of the liquid. Though both evaporation and boiling represent change of state, but these are different. Whereas evaporation occurs at all temperature, boiling occurs only at a specific temperature known as boiling point temperature. Moreover, evaporation is a surface phenomenon but boiling occurs throughout the liquid including its surface.

1. Why is cooling caused during evaporation ?
2. What is the name given to the process when liquid vapors are cooled ?
3. Is there any difference between gas and vapors ?
4. Why does alcohol evaporate faster than water ?

Solution

1. Evaporating liquid molecules take up energy from the surroundings since it is needed to bring about change in state. That is why cooling is observed.
2. It is known as condensation.
3. Yes, vapors represent the gaseous state of a substance which is liquid at room temperature. For example, water vapors but not hydrogen vapors since hydrogen is not a liquid at room temperature.
4. Because boiling point of alcohol is less than that of water.
