Question

Even when the rain is falling vertically downwards, the front screen of a moving car gets wet whereas the back screen remains dry comparatively. Explain.

Solution

  • During the motion, the relative velocity of rain with respect to car is inclined to the horizontal direction in backward direction.
  • Hence, most of the rain water comes in contact with the front screen, whereas only a very small part comes in contact with back screen. This results wetting of front screen and mostly dry for back screen.
