Question

Every substance has some magnetic properties associated with it. How will you account for the following magnetic properties?
(i) Paramagnetic property
(ii) Ferromagnetic property.

Solution

(i) Paramagnetic materials are slightly attracted by a magnetic field and the material does not retain the magnetic properties when the external field is removed. So, if the material loses its magnetic property after removal of external field and has paired electrons then we will say that the material shows paramagnetic property.

(ii) Ferromagnetism is the basic mechanism by which certain materials form permanent magnets, or are attracted to magnets.

If the material is inherently magnetic and does not require external field for it to show magnetic properties, in that case we will say that the material shows ferromagnetic property.
