Every year thousands of Monarch butterflies make a journey from Canada and the United States to spend the winter in Mexico. A new generation makes the reverse journey as summer approaches the Northern Hemisphere. What is this process called?
Migration
The process in which animals travel long distances to escape harsh seasonal conditions is called migration. Monarch butterflies migrate to escape the cold winters in Canada and the United States to reach warm Mexico. The reverse migration is done to take advantage of the plentiful food in Canada and US during summer.
Some animals also migrate to escape the dry and extremely hot weather. Migrations also occur to take advantage of plentiful food and to nesting habitats.
