Question

Except nitrogen , all the 15 group element is allotropy?

Open in App
Solution

  • Except for nitrogen and bismuth, all the elements of group-15 show allotropy.
  • Nitrogen does not show allotropy because of its small size and high electronegativity.
  • Nitrogen only has one allotrope – dinitrogen
  • The single N-N bond is weaker than the P-P bond because of high interelectronic repulsions among non-bonding electrons due to the small bond distance.
  • Antimony has three allotropes. Phosphorus and arsenic have several allotropes.
  • Bismuth alone does not exist with allotropy. Whereas all the elements in the 15th group of the periodic table show allotropy due to their variable oxidation state.
  • Bismuth due to its inert pair effect does not exist with a variable oxidation state.
