Exception of Metals and Non metals
1. Lustre: Not only metals have metallic lustre but certain non-metals like iodine and graphite have also a metallic lustre.
2. Melting point: Some metals like sodium potassium have low melting point, mercury is liquid at room temperature. Carbon a non-metal has a high melting point.
3. Density: Alkali metals have low density. Lithium has specific gravity of 0.53 whereas Iodine a non-metal has specific gravity of 4.9.
4. Conductivity: Not only metals are good conductor of electricity and heat but non-metals like graphite and gas carbon are also good conductor of heat and electricity. Some metals like Bismuth and Lead, are poor conductors of electricity.
5. Action with acids: All metals do not give off hydrogen by reaction with acids, e.g. Copper, mercury, Silver, Gold, Platinum etc.
6. Hardness: All metals are not very hard, e.g. Lead is a very soft metal. Diamond a non-metal is the hardest substance so far known to the man.
