Carbon dioxide molecules absorb infrared photons and start vibrating. They then re-emit the photons back in the opposite directions. Hence, they act almost opaque to infrared rays. So, when the Sun's energy reaches the Earth's atmosphere, some of it is absorbed by the Earth, and the infrared radiation (heat) that is radiated back is caught by the excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This increases the temperature of the Earth and causes greenhouse effect.
