The 6 categories of IUCN are-
1. Protected areas category la- This areas in strictly protected to preserve bio diversity. Human activities are controlled to ensure conservation of values. It main objective is to minimise disturbance through careful planning and implementation of research and other approved activities.
2. Wilderness area- This area is usually large unmodified or a little modified to retain their natural character and influence without permanent human habitation. This areas enables the indigenous communities to maintain their traditional wilderness-based lifestyle. It also protects the culture and spiritual values and respect for the ancestors.For eg- Dibang National sanctuary.
3. National Park- It is an area of the countryside protected by the state for enjoyment of the general public and also preservation of the wildlife.Eg- Rajaji national park, Jim corbett national park.
4. Natural monument - These are protected areas to protect particular species or habitats. These areas need regular, active interventions to address the requirements of the particular species or to maintain habitats.For eg- Taj Mahal, India Gate.
5. Protected landscape- This is a protected area where the interaction of people and nature over time has produced an area of distinct character with significant, ecological, biological, cultural and scenic values.
6. Protected area with sustainable use of natural resources- This area conserves ecosystem and habitats together with associated cultural values and traditional natural resource management systems. They are generally large, with most of the area in a natural condition, where a proportion is under sustainable natural resource management.
