Explain antacids with a suitable example.

Antacids are the chemical substances which neutralize excess acid in the gastric juices and give relief from acid indigestion, acidity, heartburns and gastric ulcers.

Antacids remove excess acid and raise the pH to an appropriate level in the stomach.

Some commonly used antacids are baking soda (sodium hydrogen carbonate), aluminium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, calcium carbonate etc.
