Solution

Dear Student,

Consumer movement aimed at protecting and promoting the interest of the consumer and to protect them from black marketing, hoarding etc. This resulted and culminated into COPRA , that is Consumer Protection Act 1986. By virtue of this act the following rights were granted to the consumers:

a. Right to safety- There are certain goods that may cause serious injuries, like pressure cookers, gas cylinders, electronics etc. If there is any manufacturing defect in these goods, consumers have right to be protected against any fatal risk or injury.
b. Right to be informed which has made it mandatory for manufacturers to display information, pertaining to the product.
c. Right to choose:
Right to choose implies that Any consumer who receives a service in whatever capacity, regardless of age, gender and nature of service, has the right to choose whether to continue to receive the service. If that right is denied to that person the person can go to consumer court file a case against the organization or party concerned. The person is liable to be compensated in case his/her right is choose is denied.
d. Right to redressal- Under the Consumer Protection Act 1986, a three tier judicial system has been formedThis act provides establishment of consumer disputes redressal agencies at district, state and national level. Consumers can invoke their right to redressal and right to represent. This right allows consumer to file a complaint against the manufacturers if he /she feels exploited and can seek claim.

e. Right to be heard – The consumers must be ensured that their voices are heard.
f. Right to consumer education – It is imperative that Consumers must be informed about their rights and must be aware about redressal mechanism.

All these rights were the result of growing awareness among the consumers, increased dissatisfaction among them, growing fraudulent practises in the market, all this acted as a catalyst to bring about a change leading to consumer movement who demanded protection for their interests.
