Question

Explain any three characteristic properties of a solid on the basis of molecular model of atom.

Solution

1. Incompressibility:

  1. Solids are incompressible, meaning the constituent particle is arranged close to each other and because of that, there is negligible space between the constituent particle.

2. Rigid:

  1. Solids are rigid.
  2. This is due to lack of space between the constituent particles which make it rigid or fixed.
  3. Solids have definite mass, volume and shape due to which it has a compact arrangement of constituent particles.

3. Inter-molecular distance:

  1. The inter-molecular distance between molecules is short.
  2. Due to this, the force between the constituent particles (atoms, molecules or ions) is very strong.
  3. The constituents particles can only oscillate about their mean position.
