Question

Explain any three properties of magnetic field lines.

Open in App
Solution

  1. A magnetic field line is a smooth curve around a magnet such that the tangent at any point of it gives the direction of the magnetic field at that point.
  2. In other words, a magnetic field line is a path along which a hypothetical north pole tends to move.
  3. The magnetic field lines form closed loops going from the north pole to the south pole outside the magnet and from the south pole to the north pole inside the magnet.

4. Two magnetic field lines cannot intersect each other. It is because at the point of intersection, two tangents can be drawn which means two directions of the magnetic field at a point which is not possible.

5. The density of field lines represents the strength of the magnetic field. The denser the field lines, the stronger the magnetic field and vice-versa.

6. Thus the magnetic field is stronger at the poles of a magnet because the relative density of field lines is more there.
