Question

Explain briefly the meaning and concept of
interference and polarisation

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,
Interference
When two light from different coherent sources meet together, then the energy distribution due to one wave is disturbed by the other. This modification in the distribution of the light energy due to super-position of two light waves is known as Interference of light.
Applications of interference:
1-The wavelength of an unknown source of light can be determined.
2-Thickness of a thin transparent sheet can be determined. 3- Refractive index of a liquid can be estimated.
4- The radius of curvature of a lens can be determined very accurately.

Polarisation
The phenomenon due to which the vibrations of light are restricted in a particular plane is called the polarisation of light. Polarised light waves are light waves in which the vibrations occur in a single plane. The process of transforming unpolarized light into polarised ligation. Transverse waves show polarisation.
Methods by which polarisation of light waves can be achieved are reflection and transmission.
