Question

Explain briefly why a balloon filled with helium
gas rises in air?

Open in App
Solution

  1. The balloon rises up in the air because the weight of the helium gas is less than the weight of the displaced air by the balloon that is upthrust.
  2. As it is less dense than air, a helium balloon floats in the air it goes up because of a force called buoyancy.
  3. As long as the balloon and helium in it are lighter than the air itself the balloon will float and go up.
