The atomic number of sodium(Na) = 11
The electronic configuration of Na = 2,8,1
The atomic number of chlorine(Cl) = 17
The electronic configuration of Cl = 2,8,7
Na transfer its one electron to Cl, so that Na can achieve noble gas configuration (2,8) whereas Cl accepts one electron from Na so that Cl can achieve noble gas configuration (2,8,8) as shown below:
