Question

Explain chemical reaction of metals.

Open in App
Solution

REACTIONS OF METALS
A) with hydrogen
Metals having strong tendency to lose electron(s) force hydrogen to accept electron(s) and form metal hydrides.
e.g. 2Li+H22LiH
B) with oxygen
Metals have a tendency to form metal oxides.
e.g. Magnesium when burnt in air, gives magnesium oxide.
Mg+O2MgO
C) with bases
When alkali (base) reacts with metal, it produces salt and hydrogen gas.
e.g. Sodium hydroxide gives hydrogen gas and sodium zincate when reacts with zinc metal.
Zn+NaOHNa2ZnO2+H2
D) with acids
Acids react with most metals to form hydrogen gas and salt.
e.g. zinc and sulphuric acid react giving zinc sulphate, a salt, and hydrogen gas.
Zn+H2SO4ZnSO4+H2
E) with water
Metals react with water and produce a metal oxide and hydrogen gas.
e.g. calcium, when added to water, gives calcium hydroxide.
Ca+H2OCa(OH)2
F) Metals react with Solutions of other Metal Salts: Reactive metals can displace less reactive metals from their compounds in solution or molten form.
e.g. Zn+CuSO4ZnSO4+Cu
G) Metals react with non-metals
Non-metals are electronegative in nature. They have a very high electron affinity to complete their octet where as metals are electropositive in nature they lose electrons to attain noble gas configuration. So their takes place a complete sharing of electrons between the metal and non-metal forming a bond between them. Such bonds are called ionic bonds. In this way metal and non-metal react.
