• The harmful gases, like Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide, present in the atmosphere reacts with the water vapor present in the atmosphere to form Sulphuric acid and nitric acid.
• These acids then drop with the rain, making the rain acidic. This is called acid rain.

Causes of acid rain

• The causes of acid rain is the harmful gases such as Sulphur dioxide and Nitrogen dioxide given out from industries or by natural causes like how a lightning strike in the atmosphere particles gets mixed with the wet components of rain.
• These substances can rise very high into the atmosphere, where they mix and react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form more acidic pollutants, known as acid rain.

The harmful effects of acid rain

• Acid rain causes skin irritation.
• Inhibits germination of plants.
• Causes corrosion to bridges and buildings.
• It changes the fertility of the soil, making it more acidic.
• Destroys flora and fauna.
