A substance which rotates the plane polarised light towards right is called dextrorotatory while a substance that rotates the plane polarised light towards left is called laevorotatory.

Dextrorotary compounds have a positive rotation, while laevorotatory compounds have negative rotation. Two enantiomers have equal and opposite rotations.
