The types of hydrocarbons which have molecules contain more than one ring fused together are known as polycyctic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHS). Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are present in the atmosphere as a component of particulate pollution which is inhaled deep into the lungs.
