Question

Explain diffusion phenomenon based on the state of matter

Open in App
Solution

Diffusion is the spreading out and intermixing of one substance into another due to the movement of particles. It takes place from the region of high concentration to the region of low concentration till the uniform distribution is attained.
1) Diffusion occurs in Solids, Liquids, and gases.

2) Diffusion in Gases:
The rate of diffusion is higher in gases due to more intermolecular space and they move with higher Kinetic energy.
Lighter gases diffuse faster than heavier gases.
example: Mixing of two gases.

3) Diffusion in Liquids:
The rate of diffusion in liquids is greater than in solids.
example: Mixing of KMnO4 solution in water.

4) Diffusion rate in Solids :
The rate of diffusion in solids is very rarely observed.

5) factors affecting rate of diffusion:

Temperature: As temperature increases the rate of diffusion increases.
Density: As density increases the rate of diffusion decreases.
