The potential difference between metal rod (electrode) and its ion in solution is known as electrode potential.In other words, the tendency of an electrode to lose or gain electrons when it is in contact with the solution of its own ions is known as electrode potential.

Following factors effects the electrode potential:

(i) nature of the metals and its ions.

(ii) concentration of the ions in the solution.

(iii) temperature.
