Question

Explain fertilisation

Open in App
Solution

Fertilization is the fusion of the male and the female gametes with each other to give rise to a single-celled zygote. The zygote then undergoes repeated divisions to give rise to a new individual.

As soon as pollen grain lands on stigma of a female flower, it starts moving towards the female germ cells in the ovary. The pollen tube grows out of the pollen grain and it moves through the style to reach the ovary. After fertilization, the zygote undergoes mitosismitosis repeatedly to produce embryo within the ovule which then develops a tough coat and gets converted into seed.
