Question

Explain freezing on the basis of kinetic theory.

Open in App
Solution

  1. Freezing is a process in which a liquid changes into a solid on cooling to its freezing point.
  2. When a liquid is cooled, the molecules lose kinetic energy and slow down.
  3. On cooling further, a temperature is reached at which the slow down is enough to hold the molecules as a solid.
  4. This results in the freezing of the liquid.
