Mahatma Gandhi advocated Panchayat Raj, a decentralized form of Government where each village is responsible for its own affairs, as the foundation of India's political system. The term for such a vision was Gram Swaraj ("village self-governance"). Gram Swaraj, a special term coined by Mahatma Gandhi and later developed by Vinoba which promotes conversion of every village into a self-efficient autonomous entity where all the systems and facilities for a dignified living are available. Gram swaraj, or village self-rule, was a pivotal concept in Gandhi's thinking. As you may know, the village (and villager) was at the centre of Gandhi's thought insofar as India's social and political organisation was concerned, at least, the type of social and political organisation that he wanted to see for India.
