The Ganga river become the dumping source of untreated sewage waste for a number of cities and towns and also untreated effluents of thousands of industries set up along its banks.
Besides, immersion of ashes and throwing of unburnt corpses in the river etc. has also been practiced since several hundred years.
Bathing, washing of clothes, garbage disposal etc. are other activities which pollute the water of the river Ganga.
All these activities increased the pollution load of river water and resulted in the killing of aquatic life including ‘fishes.
In , Ganga Action Plan (GAP) was formulated to reduce the pollution load of the river Ganga.
Following are the important aspects of GAP :
Treatment of sewage waste of cities/towns before its disposal in the river water.
Enforcement of setting up of effluent treatment plants by the industries.
Establishment of electric crematoria for the disposal of dead bodies.
