Question

Explain -H2O is Liquid but H2S is a gas.

Open in App
Solution

  • H2S is a gas and water is liquid at room temperature. Water exists as a liquid however hydrogen sulphide exists as gas because there is strong hydrogen bonding between the water molecules due to the high electronegativity of the oxygen atom. However, the extent of hydrogen bonding is not considered as the electronegativity of sulphur atoms is less.
  • Whereas Sulphur is less electronegative than oxygen, and the S-H bond is much less polar than the O-H bond. Hence, there is no hydrogen bonding in hydrogen sulphide, and it exists as a gas.
