Question

Explain Haloform reaction with an example.

Open in App
Solution

Haloform reaction is used to oxidise methyl ketones (CH3C=O) and aldehydes (ethanal group), by sodium hypohalite (NaOX) to sodium salts of corresponding carboxylic acids having one carbon atom less than that of carbonyl compound. This oxidation does not affect carbon-carbon double bond present in the molecule. The methyl group is converted to haloform (CHX3).
