Question

Explain how Alcohols of lower molecular mass are soluble in water.

Open in App
Solution

Alcohols of lower molecular mass have the ability to form hydrogen bonds with water molecule, thereby solubilises in water.
But as the number of alkyl chain increases, the hydrophobic part hinders H-bonding and thus decreases the solubility of higher alcohols in water.
