Question

Explain how CO2 is able to control fire

Open in App
Solution

CO2 acts as a fire extinguisher:-

  • We all that for combustion we need oxygen.
  • When there is any fire, the Carbon dioxide used on that fire does not directly react with it to extinguish the fire.
  • As Carbon dioxide is heavier than water, it cuts the connection between oxygen and the fuel by covering the fire.
  • The Carbon dioxide is kept under pressure, and when it is released it expands and cools down.
  • This cool down that is the decrease in the temperature also helps to control the fire and put it out.
