Explain how crystallisation can be performed on a saturated solution.

  • Take a saturated solution and heated in a beaker.
  • Continue heating and stirring till all the solute has dissolved in the solution.
  • Once all solute is dissolved, stop heating the solution and let it cool down very slowly.
  • The resultant solution is what is known as a supersaturated solution as it contains more solute dissolved in it than what would normally be present. .
  • Using a pencil, place a thread into the saturated solution and keep it undisturbed for some time.
  • Slowly remove the thread from the solution by moving it upwards. We can observe that crystals have formed on the thread.
This is how crystallisation can be performed on a saturated solution.
