Question

Explain how differences in fluid pressure create buoyant force on an object.

Open in App
Solution

Water pressure is exerted on all sides of an object. The pressure exerted horizontally on the sides cancel each other out. The pressure exerted at the bottom is greater than that exerted at the top because pressure increases with depth. This creates an overall upward force on the object which is called the buoyant force.
