Question

Explain how heat affects during a change of Drinks are cooled more effectively by ice at 0°C than by water at 0°C.Why?

Solution

Ice cools more effectively rather than water at 0o C. This is because of latent heat of fusion of ice. Ice absorbs more energy from surroundings, making cooling more effective because, ice is fusing to liquid water, while water already at liquid state does not involve breaking of any bonds. But in solid ice, breaking of bonds is done so, more energy is absorbed, so more cooling takes place.
