Question

Explain how the nature of the two surfaces in contact affects friction between them.?

Open in App
Solution

Frictional force:

  1. The frictional force is a contact force that acts between two surfaces in contact.
  2. On a microscopic level, even a smooth-looking surface has irregularities.
  3. When an object is placed over another object these irregularities get interlocked and oppose the motion.
  4. A rough surface has more irregularities therefore it will cause more friction.
  5. For example, sandpaper and road cause more friction.
  6. On the other hand, smooth surfaces like glass, ice, and oily surfaces have fewer irregularities which cause less friction.
