Question

Question 9
Explain how the painting of an iron gate prevents it from rusting.

Open in App
Solution

Rust forms when iron or its alloys are exposed to moist air. The oxygen and water in the air react with the iron metal to form the hydrated oxide(Fe2O3.xH2O). The oxygen needs moisture as a catalyst and reactant to accelerate the reaction, so in the absence of moisture, iron won't rust. The essential component for rusting is the contact of metal with oxygen and moisture. When the iron gate is painted, it protects the iron from getting in contact with oxygen and moisture. Hence, prevents it from rusting.
