Question

Explain how the pollination mechanism in salvia favors cross pollination.

Open in App
Solution

  • In Salvia, pollination is entomophilous i.e. it occurs by means of insects
  • Pollination occurs by turn pipe mechanism.
  • The flowers are bisexual but protandrous which means anther mature before stigma and hence, self pollination is prevented.
  • Instead of four, there are two stamens having two theca each and separated by a long connective.
  • The petals of Salvia are bifurcated. When an insect visits a flower and sits on the petals, the stamens are brought down to the touch the back of insect and pollen are laden on it.
  • When the insect visits another flower, cross pollination occurs.
