In the northeastern region of India, water is conserved through ponds that are dug into the ground. During the rainy season, these ponds get filled up with water. This water is then used during the dry season.
In Nagaland, this system is known as the zabo system. There, ponds are built in terraces that are cut out of hills.
In Meghalaya, bamboo drip irrigation is practised as a means of reducing the wastage of water during irrigation. In this system, pipes are constructed out of bamboo in fields. Small holes are made into the bamboo pipes from which water drips out to irrigate crops.
