Question

Explain hybridisation of HCN and HN3.

Open in App
Solution

HCN : In HCN molecule Catom is sphybridised orbital. One of the sphybrid orbital overlap with the 1s orbital of Hatom, while the other mixes with one of the 3 atomic porbitals of Natom.
HCN: It is a linear molecule.
C[He]2s22p2
H1s1
N[He]2s22p3
HN3 :
Octet rule states that most stable structure assure 8 electrons around every atom.
stable structure of HN3 is
N=N=NH
Here the central Natom is sphybridised where as outer Natoms play sp2 hybridisation.
