Question

Explain Markovnikov rule taking a suitable example

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Markovnikov's rule states that : when H-X adds across the double bond of an alkene, the H atom becomes attached to the C atom that has the larger number of H atoms already attached.
Eg. when propene reacts with hydrogen bromide, Br gets attached to the C with less H atom while H gets attached to C with more H atom giving 2-bromopropane as the product.
CH3-CH=CH2 +HBr CH3-CH(Br)-CH3
