Question

Explain percolation rate.

Open in App
Solution

Percolation rate of water in soil: The phenomenon of absorption of water by soil is termed percolation.
The rate of absorption is different for different types of soils. The rate of absorption of soil depends on its composition. A soil with a high percolation rate can hold water for a short period of time. On the other hand, a soil with low percolation rate will hold water for a longer time. The percolation rate helps in the selection of suitable soil for crop growth.

The percolation rate can be calculated by using the below formula.
Percolation rate = Amount of water (ml)/ Percolation time (min)
